German organic apples

A woman who set up stand in her front garden in Eastbourne to give away free fresh producehas been inundated with messages of support from across the globe.

Helen Burton has spent the past week giving away organic apples, flower pots full of free-range eggs from her chickens and food plants she had grown herself, and the Edible Eastbourne committee member posted about her‘Food is Free’ plans on Facebook.

In less than 24 hours, nearly a thousand people from countries such as Germany, USA, Canada, India, and the Philippines, as well as others from across the UK, had been in touch to commend what she was attempting.

Burton told the Eastbourne Herald: “I want to encourage people to share produce with their community. The amazing response to my own free food table shows how popular this idea is. We are also working to grow food for the community to harvest in public places.”

She noted that anyone who is interested can join the on-trend food revolution. All they have to do is put their produce in their front garden with a ‘Help Yourself’ sign.

Burton added: “It would be great to see food sharing become a common occurrence.”
