Tesco Purley Extra

Tesco Extra in Purley, south London, is one store benefiting from the extra labour

Tesco in-store teams have welcomed a move that sees head office employees, including board members, working one day a week every fortnight on shop floors, in a bid to 'reconnect' the business.

Chief executive Dave Lewis and other senior board members were among the first to participate in the initiative, which he first announced last month and is set to run until Christmas.

The retailer usually rolls out a similar scheme around the festive season to help stores during their busiest time of the year, but this year sees head office staff in stores over a much longer period of time.

Jobs undertaken include stocking shelves, working on the tills and providing support in any department, and staff can pick any Tesco store to work in.

Store manager of Tesco Purley Extra, Richard Frear, said the move has been “well received” by existing in-store staff.

“We usually have someone in around Christmas but in the past it has taken half the day to train someone. Now we will have people who will know as much as we do about produce by Christmas.”

Rebecca Miller, Tesco communications officer, said the fact that staff, including buyers, have been working on shop floors has already created positive changes. “They have seen things working well in other departments, and asked 'why don’t we do that too?' And then the changes have been made within a week.

“Some parts of the Tesco business usually have nothing to do with the stores. It’s about re-connecting different parts of the business,” she said.
