Budgens: Promoting heritage varieties

Retail chain Budgens is promoting heritage tomato varieties in support of British Tomato Week, which takes place next week from 18-24 May.

Tasting and showcase events of Budgens’ range of six British tomato varieties will take place at three stores during the week.

The range includes its carry home heritage tomatoes, discover the taste Piccolo tomatoes as well as British loose cherry vine, baby plum and cocktail vine varieties.

“This year we’re celebrating heritage tomatoes, a range of tomato varieties grown in times gone by that come in all different shapes, sizes and tastes,” said Budgens director, Mike Baker.

“At Budgens we like to stock locally-grown produce from smaller suppliers and British Tomato Week is a celebration of that.”

Grower Rohan Page said: “The Budgens tasting sessions will showcase the breadth of varieties available, from the intensely sweet cherry tomatoes to the robust almost meaty flavours of the larger varieties.

“We’re looking forward to getting people excited about this extremely versatile ingredient.”

British Tomato Week is run annually by the industry’s growers’ association is now in its 11th year.
