Marks & Spencer has announced a shake-up of its senior management team following the departure of executive director for general merchandise John Dixon.

Dixon, who is leaving to pursue opportunities elsewhere, has been replaced by Steve Rowe, while current trading director Andy Adcock has been promoted to director of food and will report to chief executive Marc Bolland on an interim basis.

Adcock joined M&S in 2006, following senior management roles at Asda as fresh food trading director and brand director. He previously spent eight years as a category manager at Sainsbury’s.

Rowe has been with the company for over 26 years and has experience across food, retail, general merchandise and e-commerce. As executive director for food, M&S said Rowe has been “instrumental in ensuring that M&S has to outperform in a challenging market”.

M&S chairman Robert Swannell said: “On behalf of the board, I would like to thank John for his service over many years and his many contributions to the business in that time. I am delighted that Steve has been appointed to head up General Merchandise and wish him every success in his new role.”

Dixon said: “I have thoroughly enjoyed many happy and successful years at M&S. I now have the opportunity to become a Chief Executive and have therefore resigned from this great company. I wish it, and all my colleagues, every continued success.”
