Waitrose has been named Best Bramley Retailer in recognition of its strong sales, increased market share and innovative promotion of the cooking apple this year.

The supermarket collected its gong at the annual Brammy Awards in London this week, with judges praising its rebranding of Bramleys in store from ‘Essentials’ to ‘Cooks Ingredients’, offering ideas for usage on the front of pack and promoting Bramley recipes in store, on its website and in Waitrose magazines.

The fruit was also incorporated into Waitrose's nationwide in-store British Apple Festival activity and a special Bramley cookery event was held at the Waitrose Weekend cookery school.

Other winners at the Bramley Campaign-organised event were Tesco, which won Best Manufacturer of a Bramley Apple Sauce for its British Bramley Apple Sauce with Herefordshire Cider; Sainsbury’s, whose British Bramley Apple Pie helped it to the Best Manufacturer of a Sweet Bramley award; and Mrs Darlington’s Bramley Apple & Mint Relish, which won the Best Bramley Manufacturer of a Savoury Product category.

Mary Berry was named Best Bramley Media Chef and Lindsey Bareham of The Times was honoured as Best Bramley Food Writer.

Adrian Barlow, chairman of the Bramley Apple Campaign, said: “The Brammy Awards allow the industry an opportunity to recognise and thank retailers, manufacturers, chefs and writers for their continued support of Bramley. This year’s awards were more competitive than ever but these winners shone through by showing dedication to producing top-quality results - it’s a great honour to be able to celebrate their achievements.
