The cost of a basket of grocery essentials fell in September to the lowest amount so far in 2015, according to data from shopping and comparison website MySupermarket.

This was aided by the price of peppers, grapes and apples falling by 9 per cent, 5 per cent, and 4 per cent respectively.

The cost of 35 weekly essentials MySupermarket monitors fell from £86.75 in August to £85.93 in September, a month-on-month fall of 1 per cent. This represents a weekly saving of £2.20 compared to the same basket in January, and a saving of 5 per cent, or £4.88 per shop, for the same basket of goods compared to a year ago, September 2014, when the basket cost £90.81.

However, consumers shopping for pasta, cucumbers and carrots have seen price rises of 6 per cent, 4 per cent and 4 per cent respectively.

Gilad Simhony, CEO of mySupermarket.co.uk, said: ‘’Although we welcome the fall in grocery prices, the latest figures should be met with caution as they are part of an environment of confusing and regular price changes designed to catch shoppers out and pay more for the products they love.

'The arrival of carrier bag charges this month heralds another charge that consumers will be expected to cover. It is in this context that we advise shoppers to check prices as the savings can add up significantly.’’
