Agricultural education charity Marshal Papworth Fund chairman James Parrish is stepping down after four years and will be replaced by Tom Arthey.

Parrish, who has been involved with the fund since 2008, is described as having been “fundamental in developing the fund’s influence and impact”.

He said: “The Marshal Papworth Fund’s point of difference from other charities is its length of experience working in developing countries, specifically in Africa. I have very much enjoyed my time as chairman and hope I have made a difference to the lives of the students and their home countries.

“During my tenure with the fund I had the opportunity to attend the Royal Agricultural Society of the Commonwealth Conference in Zambia, an experience I will never forget. Seeing first-hand the farming practices, while also having the opportunity to discuss and address the agricultural issues they face on a daily basis, was invaluable for my role.”

Farming consultant and Marshal Papworth Fund committee member Arthey studied land management at Reading University before becoming a chartered surveyor and land agent, and is looking forward to taking a more prominent role in the charity’s activities. “James has been an inspirational chairman and I have some very big shoes to fill,” he said.

“I hope to use my business nous to bring a fresh approach to the fundraising efforts, so that we can continue to increase the number of individuals we help around the world.”

The Marshal Papworth Fund is managed by the East of England Agricultural Society and has so far funded 145 students from developing countries through its masters programme and 10-week short course.
