Iceland store

Former Morrisons fresh food trading director Andy Garton has taken over as head of buying at Iceland.

Garton, who spent 11 years at Morrisons, left the Bradford-based grocer last October. He held a succession of roles at the supermarket, having worked his way up from trainee buyer in July 2004.

Since then he was promoted to buying manager in 2008, head of produce in 2011 and category director for produce/seafood and fresh strategy in 2013. He moved to his latter role of trading director for fresh foods in August 2014.

He took up his new role at Iceland this month. The discounter faced a tough time of it in the latest Kantar Worldpanel till roll data, losing two per cent of sales in the 12 weeks to 31 January 2016 compared to the previous year, and leaving it with a 2.2 per cent market share.

Garton also did a three-year stint as a council member for the Fresh Produce Consortium, leaving in June 2015.
