Reynolds has hired Jill McDonald as its new operations manager following an unusual recruitment process - its 700 staff voted on her appointment during a BBC TV show.

The Waltham Cross-based catering supplier took part in Who's the Boss?, a BBC2 show examining the concept of collaborative hiring. The approach is more commonly associated with Silicon Valley firms such as Facebook, Google and Apple.

McDonald, a former head of haulage, faced off against 48-year-old Andrew Walker in a series of challenges observed, unbeknownst to them, by Reynolds' entire staff watching on TVs and iPads.

The tasks varied from salesmanship to customer service, route planning and delivery, where they were paired with Reynolds staff assessing their performance.

Staff then voted for their favourites, with the results being revealed to the two contenders by managing director Tony Reynolds.

McDonald professed herself over the moon at her success: 'I feel like I’ve won the lottery, and I didn’t buy a ticket,” she said on learning of her appointment.

Who's the Boss? is currently available to watch on BBC iPlayer here.
