Greggs is set to start stocking Fairtrade bananas in 350 of its branches as of this Thursday (5 May).

The trial - which will run for several weeks - forms part of the chain's commitment to extending its healthy snacking options.

The products will be sourced from Colombia, Costa Rica and the Dominican Republic.

Euan Venters, commercial director at the Fairtrade Foundation, said: 'We welcome Greggs’ commitment to extending the range of Fairtrade products on offer to their customers to bananas. This is sweet news indeed for banana producers. When you buy Fairtrade bananas, you’re supporting growers all around the world to get a fair price for their crop, in addition to a Fairtrade Premium to fund local community projects.”

A spokesperson at Greggs said: 'Greggs are proud to be able to make a positive difference through our commitment to purchasing Fairtrade bananas. We are committed to responsible sourcing and are active supporters of Fairtrade with all of our tea, coffee, hot chocolate, sugar sachets, orange juice and apple juice being certified Fairtrade.'
