Roger Sayer

The salad sector has been left in shock after the sudden death of industry veteran Roger Sayer.

Sayer died peacefully at home this weekend at the age of 64. It is understood he was not known to be suffering from any serious health conditions and his family are awaiting the coroner's report.

Sayer worked at cucumber specialist Humber Growers for 26 years, overseeing the business as chairman and managing directorwhen it acquired Sussex tomato grower VHB in 2001.

He was also co-owner, together with his brother, of family East Yorkshire protected crop grower RM Sayer.

Sayer, who had a degree in biological sciences, played an active role in industry affairs, having been one of the founder directors of Stockbridge Technology Centre and a chairman of the NFU Board for Horticulture.

He was also a leading member of the Tomato and Cucumber Growers' Associations, and was active in discussions at a national level on issues such as the Climate Change Levy and EU Fruit & Vegetable Regime.

RM Sayer's general manager Nigel Bartle told FPJ: 'At 64, he appeared fit and well and this has come as an incredible shock to family, friends and colleagues.

'There will be time to reflect on the great memories many will have of sharing time with Roger, but at the moment thoughts are with the Sayer family, following this peaceful but unexpected loss.'

Bartle said a date for a memorial is yet to be arranged, and stressed that the business would continue to operate as normal.
