Tim O'Malley Nationwide Produce on Sky News

Sky News visited Nationwide Produce this week as part of its investigation into inflation and the impact of Brexit on the nation's businesses.

In a segment that was broadcast several times during the day, reporter Adele Robinson took a tour of Nationwide's packhouse at Long Sutton in Lincolnshire and spoke to managing director Tim O'Malley to ask about the impact of inflation and the weak sterling on the firm.

The Producer Price Index - which measures what British companies charge for thier goods - has gone up by 0.3 per cent, the fastest rate in the past two years, as as result of rising import prices.

O'Malley said it now costs the company an extra £260,000a year to run its offices in Spain and the Netherlands as sterling has weakened over the course of the year.

He stressed that because much British produce is currently in season, consumers have not seen an impact in terms of rising prices, but predicted that will change as we move out of summer.

Asked whether consumers will pay more in winter, O'Malley said: 'Yes, definitely. At the moment we are negotiating prices for the winter season, where we have the pound at 18 per cent weaker. So for the winter we are going to see prices on UK supermarket shelves and for ingredients in ready meals and the restaurant sector, definitely increase in price.'

O'Malley also stressed that the government could help the agricultural sector by ensuring the free flow of labour following Brexit.
