Following the untimely passing of former Tesco manager David Horton, members of the fresh fruit and vegetable industry have come together to raise money for his family.

A JustGiving page accepting donations was set up in early August by Tim Bertin, director of food manufacturing at London-based poultry products supplier Maritime Foods.

“Many of you will know someone who has had a great job and family and then through circumstances has taken a decision in life that has led to tragedy,” Bertin writes on the JustGiving page.

“This happened to David Horton, who was a senior buyer in Tesco and took a career opportunity to work in Malaysia.”

He adds: “His wife Rachel and daughter Molly joined him. A number of decisions were taken by David that led to Rachel and Molly coming back to live in the UK and David has recently taken his own life. Rachel and Molly need some support to help start their lives again.”

The campaign is aiming to raise a total of £5,000 to support Horton’s family. At the time of publication, it had raised a total of £570.

Horton had been working as head buyer at retail chain Giant in Malaysia, before returning to the UK via Russia and Spain.

Prior to moving to Kuala Lumpur, he spent 15 years as a buyer at Tesco, eventually taking on the role of fresh produce category manager.
