British farmers will see European payments end after 2019 following the announcement by Brexit secretary David Davis of EU transition terms.
In a draft paper of the Britain's exit from the EU, Article 130 states that the CAP payments scheme, under regulation 1307/2013 will not apply in 2020.
Former NFU legal head, Julie Robinson tweeted following Davis' announcement that the UK will be “free to make changes” in 2020.
Robinson said: “Subject to the ‘nothing is agreed until everything is agreed’ principle, we now have confirmation in the latest withdrawal agreement draft that EU/UK negotiators have agreed that the CAP direct payment rules will not apply in 2020, leaving UK administrations free to make changes.”
Michael Gove has promised to keep subsidising British agriculture following Brexit, stating he would match EU level funding until at least 2022.
The Leave campaigner, and current secretary of state for Defra, said a new British agricultural policy will reward environmental and sustainable practises and other public goods.
