The Lord Mayor of the City of London paid New Spitalfields Market a visit, praising its international selection of produce.

Charles Bowman, who took up the mayor’s role in November, met with wholesalers at the market site as part of the annual Spitalfields visit by the City of London's incumbent mayor.

New chairman of the Spitalfields Tenants Association, Paul Walker, presented Bowman with a £500 cheque for the Lord Mayor’s Appeal, a charity which aims to help build a healthy, skilled, inclusive and fairer London.

Speaking after the tour the Lord Mayor said: “It’s always a huge delight and pleasure to come here to Spitalfields market, what a great start to the day. The market’s sights and smells are great for all the senses.

“It’s an international market, and that’s why I greatly enjoy coming. When I see this market in action, I see how global London is. Long may it flourish.”

Walker also thanked his predecessor Chris Hutchinson, after taking over as chairman in May this year.

Hutchinson added: “It’s been a pleasure and an honour to serve Spitalfields market for 14 years. I’d like to thank my wife who has been behind me all the way. It’s a great day in our year when the Lord Mayor visits our market.”
