Waitrose have enjoyed their best week in fresh produce sales since Christmas.

With a steady summer heatwave and a successful World Cup for England, retailers across the country have cashed in on high demand for food and drink.

Summer friendly fresh produce has struggled to keep up with demand as the heat also slows production and requires extensive irrigation.

Waitrose stated: “Sales overall were up 7.4 per cent with avocados up 17 per cent, melons up 15 per cent and salads seeing a 9 per cent uplift.”

“This week we move to 100 per cent British cherries, which are expected to be in hot demand.”
