Experienced shipping executive Doug Bannister has been brought in as chief executive of the Port of Dover at a “challenging time” as Brexit looms large.
Dover has warned of serious traffic congestion unless the government secures a Brexit deal involving frictionless trade. More recently, it also opposed plans todivert shipments via ports in Essex and Suffolkif the French government imposes new security checks that delay traffic to Calais in the event of a ‘no deal’.
On top of this, the port is still working on its Western Docks Revival project to relocateDover’s cargo business to a new cargo terminal and distribution centre, as well as building a new marina complete with waterside shops, bars and restaurants.
Bannister, who has been responsible for both short and deep sea container services during his 20 year career in the maritime sector,was formerly managing director for Maersk Line in the UK and Ireland, and held several executive roles for P&O Nedlloyd.
More recently, he was based in Jersey as group chief executive for Ports of Jersey, which includes the Island’s airport, harbours, marinas and coast guard.
Commenting on Bannister’s appointment, the Port of Dover’s chairman Richard Everitt, said: “After an extensive search I am very happy to welcome Doug and his family to East Kent. He joins at a challenging time for the port and its key customers. His skills, experience and personality will strengthen the executive team and I am confident his appointment will be welcomed by all the port’s stakeholders.”
Bannister himself added: “I am very pleased to be given this opportunity to advance the success of the Port of Dover in what will be a challenging chapter in its rich history. I am looking forward to working with the team, our customers and stakeholders to deliver this ambition.”
Bannister will assume his new position by 1 March 2019 at the latest.
