Morrisons is launching a 1kg‘Too Good to Waste’box to sell fruit and vegetables that are at the end of their shelf life but still good to eat.
The boxes, aimed at shopperson a budget, will retail at £1 in all Morrisons stores nationwide, featuring a wide assortment of fresh fruit, salad and vegetables.
With each Morrisons store stocking at least 75 varieties of fruit, over 80 types of vegetables, and more than 50 types of salad, all of which could appear in the box, the move means customers can sample more unusual produce at a lower price, or even try products they haven't eaten before.
Each item will be ‘condition checked’ by a Morrisons greengrocer to ensure it is still of good eating quality.
TheToo Good to Wastebox is another tool in Morrisons’ ongoing campaign against food waste. The retailer buys whole crops from farmers and has launched nearly 40 ‘wonky’ varieties of fruit and vegetables.
Over 400 Morrisons stores also donate surplus unsold food to a network of 459 local community groups on a weekly basis.
Drew Kirk, fruit and veg director at Morrisons, said:“We’ve listened to our customers who said they don’t want to see good food going to waste, so we’ve created these boxes and every day we’ll fill them with a wide selection of produce at risk of being thrown away.”
The boxes will be available in Morrisons’ greengrocery aisle and will be filled with a minimum of 1kg of fresh produce.
This year the supermarket chain committed to increasing the number of wonky fruit and veg products it sells by 50 per cent. To date Morrisons has also donatedover 4m unsold food items to local community groups, and it recentlyannounced it would hand out free fruit to children in stores to prevent unsold fruit being thrown away.
