Students in Australia are being encouraged to pursue a career in production horticulture through a new scholarship scheme.

Premier Fruits Group and Bundaberg Fruit & Vegetable Growers (BFVG) have established a scholarship with Central Queensland University (CQU) in memory of the late Edwin Tesch who was Bundaberg farms manager for Premier and a former director at BFVG. He died earlier this year following a long illness.

The Edwin Tesch – Premier Fruits Group and Bundaberg Fruit & Vegetable Growers Memorial Scholarship will award A$3,000 (£1,957) to a student each year pursuing a career in agricultural and food science under the CQU Bachelor of Science degree.

Premier’s national accounts manager Rodney Griffith, said the scholarship would reflect Tesch’s passion for the industry and the Bundaberg region, as well as his work ethic and commendable attributes as a businessman, community leader and family man.

Griffith said: “His legacy will always live on in our company through our culture, the farming operations and the wonderful influence he had on all with whom he engaged.”

Applications for the first scholarship are available from CQU and close on 4 January 2013.
