Tesco will be rolling out Worldwide Fruit (WFL)'s It'sFresh! avocados across its Express convenience stores.

The announcement follows a year-long trial of It'sFresh! ethylene-management technology by Worldwide Fruit on its avocados, with the supplier confirming that the packaging has helped to extend shelf-life by an additional two days.

Earlier this year, Tesco released tomatoes in its Finest range that utilised the It'sFresh! technology.

'It’s very clear the It’sFresh! technology does delay the decline in product quality and from our shelf-life testing and static storage trials, we have seen significant improvements in maintaining the fruit’s condition within the RTE specification,' said Tony Harding, technical director for WFL.

Meanwhile, Simon Lee, director of It'sFresh!, praised Tesco for its support and said that the technology can benefit growers as well as consumers.

He concluded: “Following the successful roll-out of our technology in Finest tomatoes, it is very satisfying to extend it to avocados with such a prominent retailer as Tesco.

“We have developed an excellent working partnership with WFL: like us they’re committed to quality and innovation, plus they share our vision of delivering fresher produce to benefit growers, retailers and consumers.”
