A cold snap accompanied by winds, rainfall and snow on higher ground last week swept across southern and eastern Spain last week. In the Valencia region, growers reported frosts and some hail caused damaged to stonefruit trees and to some citrus, but for the most part the rainfall is though to have benefited crops.

Cristóbal Aguado, of growers’ association Ava-Asaja said: “The truth is we needed water and this rainfall has been a blessing for our countryside. “So far, the positive effects of this weather have been much more important than any damage which so far has been very localised. We will have to wait a few more days to be able to carry out a more accurate evaluation.”

There have been some reports of damage to early peach and apricot blossom and the heavy winds may have caused damage to branches in the some citrus plantations.
