Major fresh produce group Turners & Growers has approached regulatory body Kiwifruit New Zealand in a bid to gain consent to export its kiwifruit varieties.
Currently the country’s single-desk marketing system means Zespri has the sole right to market kiwifruit outside New Zealand and Australia. Other companies wishing to export must do so in collaboration with Zespri.
According to a report in Business Day, Turners & Growers is seeking permission to export to multiple countries on four renewable five year terms.
It hopes to be able to market its gold, red and sweet green varieties.
A spokesperson from Zespri would only tell the newspaper it had reviewed the application and provided feedback to Kiwifruit New Zealand.
