Australian orange production is forecast at 428,000 tonnes in 2001/02, its lowest level for 20 years. If realised, this would mark a 31 per cent fall on the previous season's record harvest, with Valencia output down 34 per cent to 242,000t and Navels 25 per cent to 186,000t. Nonetheless, according to the USDA, quality is expected to be much better, along with individual fruit size ö the latter more in line with export market needs.
