Australia's banana supplies last week reached their lowest level following the devastation from Cyclone Yasi in February, according to the Australian Banana Growers' Council (ABGC).
In a statement issued last Friday (17 June), ABGC president Cameron MacKay said supplies were a their minimum due to recent cold weather in Queensland and wet weather in northern New South Wales.
"While the interruption to supply will continue for another month, consumers can be assured that growers are doing everything they can to get fruit back on the shelves as soon as possible," he said.
"As the weather warms up over the coming weeks, supplies will steadily increase."
Mr MacKay added that customers should look forward to having bananas back on the shelves from early August.
Banana growers across Far North Queensland were the worst affected by Tropical Cyclone Yasi, which hit on 2 February.
Around 95 per cent of major production was affected in the Tully and Innisfail region, some 10 per cent on the Atherton Tablelands, and 100 per cent in the Kennedy area south of Cardwell.
