Zespri Green kiwifruit

Zespri has completed risk and opportunity assessments, and developed its tools and technology in the sustainability areas of greenhouse-gas emissions, water and waste, but has not yet enhanced its business in any of the six key areas it identifies in its 2011 Sustainability Update.

In the packhouse Zespri has put on trial biodegradable fruit labels, bio-plastic polyliners and bio-plastic pocket packs.

The New Zealand kiwifruit marketer is also involved with research to optimise its water use and is conducting a supply-chain logistics review.

In addition it wants to understand how changes in growing techniques influence soil carbon.

Lain Jager, Zespri's chief executive, described its overall progress as 'commendable'.
