Australian boffins have created a hi-tech method to scare birds from crops which they claim could save the fruit industry millions each year.

Melanie Symons and Chris Clark, researchers at the University of South Australia, have developed a software system that identifies a bird species by processing its call and then selecting an appropriate scaring tactic, including loud music.

The pair set up the system after deciding traditional methods, such as scarecrows or gas guns were proving ineffective.

Clark said: “Existing techniques fail because the birds become accustomed to them easily, our research has suggested that scaring techniques need to be species specific, and more than one scaring technique is needed to maximise scaring efficiency.”

He said they were now hoping the system could be developed commercially.
