Central Queensland fruit growers are offering a $250,000 reward for information about the source of citrus canker.

The Aussie growers are putting up the money if information leads to a conviction for illegal importation of plant material.

A spokesman said the reward is a sign of the desperate state of the industry. "[Some of us] have got fruit ready to send now and we're still no closer to market access," he said.

"The rumours we're hearing [are] that we're out for probably 12 months or so at least, or probably two years.

"[Federal Agriculture Minister] Warren Truss did say they wouldn't have any sort of an inquiry until more information was brought forward, so this is a path we've decided to go down."
