Australian apple growers have lashed out in fury following a rejection of their appeal to keep New Zealand apples out of Australia.

The industry will demand a Senate inquiry, after the Import Risk Analysis Appeal Panel dismissed Australian growers’ claims that New Zealand apples could bring the fireblight disease to the country.

Biosecurity Australia has recommended that imports be allowed, but under strict conditions.

However, John Corboy of Apple and Pear Australia has slammed the decision as “appalling”, and believes the matter may end up in court.
