Unusual weather conditions in New Zealand over the last few months mean stonefruit growers are preparing for a mixed season.

Cherry growers in New Zealand’s Central Otago area are looking at full crops of the late varieties for export, although bad weather during blossoming of the early varieties destroyed 30 per cent of the crop.

Later cherry crops from the region will be picked in December and January, and growers are reportedly weathering frosts well.

Meanwhile, variable weather in September has produced mixed pollination results for growers in the Marlborough region. Apricots, nectarines and peaches have been the worst affected by rains, with cherries relatively unscathed.
