The new variety

Prevar has licensed a new apple variety to T193 Ltd.

The bi-coloured fruit is a cross between Royal Gala and Braeburn, bred by HortResearch before the formation of the New Zealand Institute for Plant & Food Research last year.

Export rights and New Zealand marketing rights have been licensed to new company T193 - a joint venture by shareholders Fresh New Zealand Ltd, Heartland Group Ltd, Johnny Appleseed Holdings Ltd and PickMee Fruit Co Ltd.

T193 chairman Rex Graham said of the new apple: “Given it has a mild, sweet flavour profile, is refreshing, juicy and has an excellent crunchy texture, we believe it will have very wide consumer appeal. This will be an outstanding apple in the Asian markets.”

The apple, which is protected through a plant variety right under the development name PremA193, does not yet have a trademarked brand name; this will be disclosed at a later time closer to the fruit’s availability, said Graham.

Prevar ceo Dr Brett Ennis said the top-fruit firm has been working towards commercialisation of the apple for the past two years. He told FPJ: “This apple is under trial throughout the world and there are thousands of trees in the ground already. Prevar has received very positive feedback from testing site evaluators, consumers and fruit marketers who have previewed the apple.”
