Fears NZ kiwifruit virus will infect 800 orchards

Tests on kiwifruit in the Auckland region of New Zealand have found two orchards infected with the virulent form of Psa-V and 800 orchards at risk, Kiwifruit Vine Health (KVH) has said.

The orchards are located in Pukekohe, hundreds of kilometres from the Bay of Plenty region that has suffered most at the hands of the bacterial vine disease, stuff.co.nz reported.

In addition, two more cases in the area are suspected, with over 800 of the country's 3000 orchards now thought to be infected.

KVH general manager John Burke said that the confirmation simply confirmed the message to all growing regions that the threat of Psa was very real, urging growers and packhouses to continue to do all they could to protect orchards.
