Global shipping company Maersk Line has announced the launch of its new direct service from Adelaide to Asia.

The first weekly service from the South Australian capital left Port Adelaide on Tuesday 14 April, adding another port onto Maersk's ‘Boomerang’ service, which covers more than 15 ports from Malaysia to Singapore, China, Japan and South Korea, as well as Australia.

Adding Port Adelaide to the service will mean a boost for South Australian exporters who previously transported goods by rail to Melbourne before being shipped overseas.

“We aim to connect Australian ports with key economic areas and the direct call will ensure South Australia remains a strong location for imports and exports to the rest of the world,” Maesk Line’s MD Nicolaj Noes said at the official launch of the service. “We are also hoping we can help replace some of our low-value commodity exports with South Australian hay and other agri-products.”
