SweeTango has waltzed its way into the Guinness World Record books, registering the loudest crunch for an apple.
Grown by the Yummy Fruit Company in New Zealand’s Hawke’s Bay, the trade marked variety registered a decibel reading of 79.1 db(C), as measured by a certified and approved sound engineer. The minimum requirement to set a new world record was 75 db(C), just short of the sound of a doorbell which has an average reading of 80db(C).
“There have been earlier, non-official, scientific attempts to measure the crunch of an apple,” said Paul Paynter from the Yummy Fruit Company. “However, these were not attempted by a human being and certainly not in an official soundproof environment.
“This success confirms what I’ve always known; in a world of soft mushy apples or hard impenetrable apples, SweeTango really stands out.”
Art Green, star of the New Zealand series of The Bachelor, was tasked with setting the record. Green said fresh apples were delivered to his doorstep on almost a daily basis leading up to the event, allowing him to hone his craft.
“I can’t really tell you how many SweeTangos I’ve been crunching over the last few weeks,” Green explained. “I’ve been trying all sorts of techniques. It all comes down to the fruit and the size of a bite. It was a challenge to find out if smaller apples crunch louder than larger and what difference their temperature makes.”
The official Guinness World Record certificate will now go on a journey throughout New Zealand, accompanied by the Yummy Fruit Company’s soundproof SweeTango booth for consumers to take a crunch themselves.
Yummy has also donated 5,000 SweeTango apples to the Auckland City Mission, which will be used in emergency foodparcels for families in need.
