Melbourne Airport handled 43 per cent of all Australian air-freight exports in January, over half of which were fresh produce, reports online magazine Air Cargo Asia-Pacific.

The record 12,700+ tonnes of freight exported from Melbourne that month represented a 32 per cent rise compared to the prior-year period, and outstripped Sydney (30 per cent of total exports), Brisbane (13 per cent) and Perth (11 per cent) airports.

Chris Woodruff, Melbourne Airport chief executive said: 'These results highlight the vital role that international air freight plays in supporting Victorian farmers and manufacturers in getting their goods to valuable overseas markets.'
