A “go to” snack for physically active consumers, matched with an environmental “backstory”. New Zealand pipfruit marketer PickMee Fruit Company has a clear idea how it will position its Isaaq apple offering over coming seasons.

A robust medium sized apple, PickMee’s managing director John Altham said Isaaq’s balance of sugar and acid levels makes the branded variety an ideal option for people on the move.

“Its firmness means that it can handle being in a sports bag and its acid balance cuts through the sugar to make this apple a very refreshing choice during exercise,” Altham said.

Isaaq is also scab resistant; meaning less chemical spraying is required at the production level. Altham says this is just one of the selling points that will likely appeal to environmentally minded consumers.

“The packaging will also be environmentally friendly, made from biodegradable or recyclable materials,” he explained.

Trial volumes of Isaaq are likely to be available in 2017, with plans in place to rollout commercial programmes from 2018 onwards.
