Mitolo crowned king of spuds

The auction of new season baby potatoes at the annual Potatoes South Australia industry dinner has reached new heights with the Mitolo Group bidding A$11,000 for a 10kg bag.

The winning bid saw the special spuds sold for A$1.1m per tonne, surpassing last year’s winning bid by Zerella Fresh,with proceeds from the auction donated to the Little Heroes Foundation.

'Potatoes South Australia has been a great supporter of the foundation for the last five years. This event is getting bigger and bigger and the foundation is grateful for the support of a great South Australian industry,' said Chris McDermott, chairman ofLittle Heroes Foundation.

“It was wonderful to see such united, collaborative support for the most significant sector of horticulture at both a state and national level, and for our charity, the Little Heroes Foundation,” said Robbie Davis, CEO of industry body Potatoes South Australia.

Later that night, Marco Mitolo of South Australia-based Mitolo Group was crowned the 2016 King of Potatoes at the annual potato industry dinner on Adelaide.
