Woolworths odd bunch

The ugly fruit and vegetable trend has reached New Zealand supermarkets with Countdown announcing it will launch the Odd Bunch range nationwide.

The stores will sell less-than-perfect looking fruit and vegetables to cut food waste, sell more produce for growers and provide a more affordable line for customers, Countdown said in a statement released 20 February.

Hail-damaged stonefruit and carrots were the first categories to be featured under the Odd Bunch branding, available in store and online.

“There are any number of reasons why produce might look a little unusual, from growing at an odd angle to being affected by the weather. It still tastes great and is just as nutritious as regular produce,” said Chris Fisher, Countdown general manager merchandise. “With the Odd Bunch, Countdown can help our suppliers sell produce that may not have typically made it to supermarket shelves and we think many shoppers will forgive a little ugliness to help combat food waste and save.”

“As a grower we take pride in supplying premium quality vegetables, however, it’s frustrating to witness a portion of our produce going to waste simply on account of shape or other cosmetic defect that has no bearing on the taste or nutritional value of the vegetable,” added Kevin Wilcox, managing director of vegetable grower AS Wilcox & Sons.

The Odd Bunchwas launched by parent companyWoolworthsin Australia in 2014.
