Zespri SunGold

Zespri has netted NZ$98m from the allocation of more Gold3 licenses, according to New Zealand masthead National Business Review (NBR).

The single-desk marketer has issued another 400ha of the popular gold kiwifruit variety, marketed as SunGold, with the average size of successful bids believed to be 1.7ha. NBR reported that over 900 growers submitted applications under the latest round of Gold3 license applications, with 235 bids granted approval.

The move comes after Zespri released an additional 400ha of Gold3 licences last year, generating NZ$50m in additional revenue for the company.

Zespri is expected to update shareholders on its latest license release following its upcoming April board meeting, where it will also release its profit range forecast for the 2017/18 campaign.

The licensing release comes just days after New Zealand police revealed they were investigating reports that Gold3 plant material had been illegally transported to China and grown in orchards.
