The first shipment of Mexican table grapes has arrived on Australia shores, reaching the Port of Melbourne, according to Mexico’s National Health Service, Food Safety and Quality (Senasica).

The 16.7 tonnes comprised a mix of Summer Royal, Flame and Superior seedless grapes, grown in the Mexican region of Sonora  

The Australian Department of Agriculture & Water Resources granted access to Mexican grapes last year following a risk analysis of importing grapes from the North American nation.

Mexico exports around 58 per cent of its total grape crop, with around 163m tonnes valued at US$159.5m shipped to the US, Japan, Central America, South America and now Australia.
