An extra city’s worth of demand for citrus will develop in the Australian domestic market by 2020, according to the Australian Citrus Industry conference last week.

Australian Citrus Growers chief executive Judith Damiani said domestic demand growth would effectively add another city the size of Melbourne to citrus sales, according to The Weekly Times.

Internationally, she said demand would grow 600 times that amount by 2020, in growth that meant potential income rises of A$2.45bn for the Australian citrus industry.

Marketing campaigns in the US by Australian citrus growers have also been targeting high-value consumers willing to pay US$2 per orange.

Citrus exporter Riversun coordinated a recent marketing tour, where growers gathered consumer feedback with in-store retail displays of Australian fruit.
