A new apples variety from the US is sure to be on visitors’ lips at next week’s Asia Fruit Logistica in Hong Kong.

The new WA-38 cultivar, which will be marketed under the name Cosmic Crisp, will be available for tasting at the Washington Apple Commission’s (WAC) stand.

Developed by Washington State University, the new offering is characterised by its bright red skin with striking lenticels. WAC’s international marketing director, Rebecca Lyons, says the apple is slow to brown when cut and maintains flavor and texture during storage.

“It is a crisp, textured apple with good sugar, and a bit of zing from its acidity,” Lyons adds.

Commercial volumes of Cosmic Crisp are expected to be available to consumers in 2019.

Asia Fruit Logistica will be held at Asia World Expo in Hong Kong from September 5-7.
