New Zealand-based fresh produce group Turners and Growers (T&G) has said this week that major sporting events, such as the upcoming World Rowing Championships, represent a 'golden opportunity' to win new global customers for the country's fresh produce.

The group itself is a major sponsor of the championships, which take place in New Zealand on 30 October-7 November, and will be the exclusive fresh produce supplier to over 800 athletes from more than 50 countries and thousands of spectators at the event.

'The future we're building for New Zealand horticultural products is to be suppliers of choice to the top end of the international markets,' said T&G managing director Jeff Wesley. 'That means selling our fruit and vegetables as the fuel for healthy lifestyles and building relationships with elite sports and events, and gives us an excellent platform to connect with global consumers.

'For World Rowing Championship organisers the highest-quality food was vital for both athletes and visitors,' he added. 'We see this as an excellent opportunity to showcase local produce by fuelling the World Rowing Championships.'

T&G is using the event to highlight the nutritional properties of New Zealand-grown Jazz apples, Sunfirst lemons, limes, oranges, tangelos and grapefruit from Kerikeri and Beekist tomatoes from Pukekohe, along with Bonita bananas.

'Our consumers here and around the world want to know the origin of their food, how it is grown and the benefits it has for them,' Mr Wesley noted. 'We've got a large presence at the event itself where visitors can taste our fresh fruit and hear its story. We're focusing on the specific nutritional benefits of each product for athletes and healthy lifestyles.'
