The city of Hefei in China’s Anhui province is offering discounts to residents on vegetables after snow, sleet and rain destroyed produce across central, northern and eastern China late last week.

Prices of produce has more than doubled in the past week due to transport delays and damage to crops, reported Reuters.

Parts of highways connecting Henan, Shanxi, Shandong Anhui and Jiangsu provinces were blocked and infrastructure has been strained by below negative temperatures.

Airports and high-speed trains experienced closures and heavy delays last Thursday and Friday but have now all reopened as the blizzard warning lifted.

The Ministry of Agriculture said that more than 45,000 acres of fruit trees, vegetable greenhouses and tea farms were damaged by the freezing rains and snow.

Damage to vegetable greenhouses was caused by the weight of the snow collapsing the delicate structures.
