Family Mart

Allied with a subsidiary of major Indonesian manufacturer and wholesaler the Wings Group, convenience store operator Family Mart has opened its first outlet in Indonesia.

The retailer intends to develop its business in the country through its franchising agreement with the Wings Group subsidiary, PT Fajar Mitra Indah.

The Wings Group offers a logistics network and retail infrastructure, as well as knowledge of Indonesian consumer preferences, which are expected to benefit the retailer.

Family Mart is entering the country at a time when the convenience store format is groing and taking market share away from supermarkets and hypermarkets.

Convenience store numbers in Indonesia rose 63 per cent to 16,720 between 2008 and 2011, while store numbers for supermarkets and hypermarkets fell by 17 per cent to 1,229 over the same period, according to figures from the Retail Association of Indonesia.
