Japanese fruit consumption slumped to an average 5.2kg per household over May, the lowest rate for that month in the last 13 years, according to data from Japan’s Ministry of Finance.

The performance came as the average per-kg purchase price of fresh fruit in the Asian nation hit ¥488 (US$4.38), the second highest figure on record for May. Average household expenditure fell to ¥2,537 (US$22.6), the lowest for May in the past three years.

Kiwifruit continues to gain traction with Japanese consumers, with average expenditure (¥239, US$2.1) and consumption (280g) both reaching record highs for the month of May.

Likewise, the average consumption of grapes (100g) was the highest in last 13 years.
