Indonesian president Joko Widodo was on hand to open Lulu Group'sfirst hypermarket in Jakarta last week.
Located in the Cakung sub-district of East Jakarta, the hypermarket covers more than 18,580m2 and has been designed with consumer convenience in mind.
“It provides a one-stop shopping destination for the residents of the city,” LuLu Group explained in a company statement.
The UAE-headquartered retail group intends to invest US$500m in setting up 10 hypermarkets in Indonesia over the next three years.
“With an initial investment of US$300m in the first phase, we plan to open 10 hypermarkets by end-2017 and a central logistics and warehousing facility in Jakarta,” said said Yusuff Ali, chairman of Lulu Group. “These projects are likely to generate more than 5,000 job opportunities for Indonesians.”
Widodo and Ali were joined by a number of other dignitaries at the hypermarket’s official opening, including Basuki Tjahaja Purnama, governor of Jakarta, and Ahmed Abdullah Al Mussali Al Awadi, the UAE’s ambassador to Indonesia.
Lulu Group currently operates 125 stores across the Middle East, Egypt and India.
