Europlant Potatoes UK Limited to create “local structure” to expand direct marketing of potato varieties

German potato breeding company Europlant has launched a new UK subsidiary, Europlant Potatoes UK Limited, to expand the direct marketing of potato varieties.
The new company, based in Woking, Surrey, will aim to provide the “local structure” to introduce new varieties, expand licensing and provide targeted support to local customers.
It also aims to strengthen co-operation with growers, packers, licensees and other industry partners.
The subsidiary’s launch follows a challenging harvest faced by potato growers across Europe including the UK this year due to extreme heat and drought conditions, leading to smaller tubers and reduced yields across the continent.
James Paice, who has held various senior and marketing positions in fresh produce companies such as Greenvale, the Moulton Bulb Company, Lingarden and G’s, will lead the new company as managing director.
Paice said: “Europlant combines decades of experience in potato breeding with an extensive international network and a diverse portfolio of varieties. I look forward to building on this expertise for the British market together with our partners, strengthening existing business relationships and exploring new market opportunities.”
Europlant said the new UK subsidiary will underline the group’s long-term commitment to the British potato industry.
Christian Krahn, sales manager export at Europlant, said: “The UK is an important market for EUROPLANT with considerable potential. By establishing this new company, we are creating a clear local structure that will enable us to support our customers and partners for all market segments more effectively.
“Our core strengths remain unchanged: high-performing varieties, consistent quality and reliable service,” he added.
The news comes as Europlant prepares to host its annual open day on 4-6 November at the Ten Brinke site in the Netherlands, where the company will showcase established and promising new potato varieties.
The Filipa and INA table potato varieties in particular have been highlighted as displaying favourable yield, taste, grading and robustness traits.
The company will also be represented at the British Potato Conference on 18 and 19 November at the Lincolnshire Showground.
