Farmers create armchair allotments

A farm supplying asparagus to royal grocer Fortnum and Masons is offering the public the opportunity to grow their own posh produce without leaving home.

Abbey Parks Farm in East Heckington, near Sleaford has developed a project called i-Grow. The virtual gardeners rent a patch of land at the farm and manage it through a dedicated website. They choose the vegetables and herbs they want grown, receiving updates and photos on their patch's progress as farm workers tend the growing plants.

Once ready, produce is delivered to their door. Those who live nearby can collect their own produce during the harvest season.

The scheme created by the farm’s owners, father and son team Nick and Harry Loweth, has attracted the attention of a reality television show called Be Your Own Boss - the brainchild of Innocent Smoothies creator Richard Reed.

Harry Loweth said the appeal of the scheme lay in the restaurant quality field-fresh vegetables buyers received and the fact that the produce was completely traceable.
