Red berry grape brand Boombites join forces with Heart Research as growing research highlights links of anthocyanins with cardiovascular health

Red berry grape brand Boombites have partnered with Heart Research UK as part of efforts to raise awareness of cardiovascular health ahead of World Health Day on 29 September.
The partnership comes as emerging research suggests that anthocyanins, naturally occuring plant compounds found in deeply coloured fruit and vegetables, may have a role to play in cardiovascular health.
Anthocyanins are naturally occurring plant compounds responsible for the deep red, purple and blue colours found in foods including berries, red cabbage and grapes.
Boombites, a variety of naturally cultivated red berry grapes launched with UK retailers earlier this month, has a deep red centre pulp attributed to naturally occurring concentrations of anthocyanins.
The table grapes are the first in the world to have a deep red, skin-to-centre colour throughout the whole grape, according to Bloom Fresh.
Analysis by the University of Murcia found that the variety contains six times more anthocyanins than a traditional black-skinned table grape, according to Boombites.
A review recently published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition reported that people with highest intakes of anthocyanins reduced their overall risk of cardiovascular disease by 26 per cent.
The review contributes to a growing body of evidence around the potential role of these compounds in cardiovascular health.
Research cited by brand suggests anthocyanins may support cardiovascular health through a number of mechanisms, including helping to reduce inflammation and oxidative stress, protecting cells from damage and supporting healthy blood pressure.
Public health nutritionist Dr Emma Derbyshire, said: ““We already know that diets rich in fruits and vegetables, including colourful fruits such as red berry grapes, are good news for our overall cardiovascular wellbeing.
“The growing amount of research that we are now seeing, really helps to show just how important the right polyphenol plant compounds like anthocyanins can be for our heart health,” she continued.
Boombites is positioning the red berry grapes as an everyday fresh-produce source of anthocyanins, while offering a visual and nutritional point of difference from conventional table grapes.
