Gafa, who has spent 15 years with the retailer, will step down at the end of December, with commerical directors set to report directly to UK CEO Ashwin Prasad

Tesco’s managing director of food, Gordon Gafa, is to leave the retailer at the end of December, according to The Grocer.
The departure was announced to staff yesterday, 27 October, by UK CEO Ashwin Prasad, who confirmed that Tesco’s commercial directors would report directly to him with immediate effect.
No successor has been announced.
Gafa joined Tesco 15 years ago and held several senior roles, including commercial director between 2022 and 2025, before becoming food MD in June 2025.
Prasad praised Gafa’s “key role” in boosting Tesco’s relationship with suppliers.
In April, Gafa helped launch of Tesco’s ’food first’ strategy, which committed the retailer to driving quality and market share, with an ambition to build a “food first retail ecosystem” focused on quality and innovation.
He also represented Tesco in the multi-retailer ‘Let’s make a meal of it” campaign, which brought together Tesco, Sainsbury’s Morrisons, Waitrose and M&S to tackle food poverty and reduce supply chain waste.
The initiative encouraged customers to donate in-store and online, which every £1 raised funding meals for people facing hunger.
